What it means
Independent Legal Advice (ILA) means you receive advice from a lawyer who is independent of the other party in a transaction or agreement. The lawyer reviews the document with you, explains its terms and legal effects, and confirms you understand and are signing voluntarily.
When you need it
ILA is commonly required when signing a personal guarantee for a business loan, a mortgage where one party is non-title spouse, a cohabitation or marriage agreement, or any contract where a lender or the other party requires independent legal certification.
